Chungmuro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chungmuro ( Hangeul : 충무로 ; Hanja : 忠武 路 ) is an area in the South Korean capital Seoul in the Jung-gu district . It has long been the center of the South Korean film industry . The first Korean film studios settled in Chungmuro. Over time, however, they mainly moved to Gangnam . The city of Busan is now the center of the Korean film industry, but the term Chungmuro is still closely linked to the South Korean film industry, similar to how Hollywood stands for American film.

The name comes from Chungmugong , the posthumous title of Admiral Yi Sun-sin . Ro means something like "street".

In 1907 the Dansungsa opened in Chungmuro as a stage theater, which from 1918 also showed films, making it the first cinema in Korea.

Chungmuro Station

In Chungmuro there is the underground station Chungmuro Station , whose exits lead directly to the former film district. The Seoul Cinematheque is currently being built in Chungmuro.
