Chymomyza amoena is a species of the fruit fly family(Drosophilidae).

features

The flies measure 4 mm from head to wing tip. The head is orange in color, the eyes are light red, the pronotum and the scutellum are light brown in color. The upper side of the abdomen is dark in color. The legs are light yellow. Two dark bands run across the transparent wings.

Occurrence

The species is native to the Nearctic . Their distribution area extends there from the east coast of North America to Minnesota, Utah, Arizona and Mexico. The species has also been found in Europe since the mid-1970s. In 1976 the first detection was made in Czechoslovakia. It is believed that the insects came to Europe with imported apples. The flies are now common in Central Europe (Germany, Poland, France, Hungary), Italy and western Russia. The northern limit of distribution in Europe runs through the Netherlands and northern Germany. The species may also have been introduced into Japan.

Way of life

The flies lay their eggs on both unripe fruit and fruit on the ground that has been parasitized by other insects, such as apples, pears, plums or cherries. In forest areas, the flies also use nut fruits such as acorns , chestnuts or hazelnuts to lay their eggs. The larvae develop in the fruits. It was found that the species overwinters as larvae in apples lying on the ground.
