Cilliers Breytenbach

Cilliers Breytenbach (born June 19, 1954 in Lydenburg ) is a South African Protestant theologian .

Life

He studied ancient languages, philosophy, education and evangelical theology at the University of Pretoria (1973–1978). After obtaining his doctorate (summa cum laude) in Protestant theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (1983), he taught as an Associate Professor of the New Testament at the University of South Africa (1985–1988). After his habilitation in the New Testament subject at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (1986), he taught as a university professor for the New Testament and early church history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (1988–1990). He was a full professor of the New Testament at the Church University in Berlin and director of the Institute for Early Christianity and Antiquity (1990–1993). He was university professor for the New Testament with a focus on the religious, literary and contemporary history of early Christianity at the Humboldt University in Berlin (1993–2019). Since 2003 he has been Associate Professor of New Testament and Ancient Studies at Stellenbosch University .
