The Cimarron-class was a class of supply tankers in the United States Navy . The total of five units of the type came into service between 1981 and 1983, but were retired after less than twenty years of service from 1998 due to high operating costs and the reduction in the US fleet after the Cold War . Between 1990 and 1992, all units in the class received a 35.7 meter long fuselage section to increase their capacity.

history

The Cimarron class was planned as a replacement for the class of supply tankers of the same name, which entered service from 1939 . The construction contract was awarded to the Avondale Shipyard , and work on the ships began in 1978. The type ship Cimarron was launched on April 28, 1979 and was put into service on January 10, 1981. By January 1983, four identical sister ships followed .

The units of the Cimarron class were designed primarily for the supply of aircraft carrier convoys. They had a capacity to supply two aircraft carriers and up to eight destroyers with fuel.

Between 1990 and 1992, all ships of the class received an additional hull section with a length of 35.7 meters to increase the capacity of the units. During their service time, the ships were used worldwide, including in the Second Gulf War . As early as 1998, however, the units were replaced by the new Henry J. Kaiser class . The reason for this was the high operating costs of the ships, which were still powered by steam boilers, while the Henry J. Kaiser class had diesel engines . By June 1999, all Cimarrons had been taken out of service and transferred to the reserve fleet .

Between 2012 and 2015 all Cimarron-class units were sold for demolition.
