Cirilo Villaverde
Cirilo Villaverde (born October 28, 1812 in San Diego de Núñez , Cuba , † October 24, 1894 in New York City ) was a Cuban poet , journalist and freedom fighter .
Life
Since 1840 Cirilo Villaverde took part in the Cuban independence movement against the Spanish colonial power. He was the secretary of Narciso López , who later attempted invasion of Cuba by the United States in 1850 and 1851 to liberate Spain, but failed due to the lack of support from the Cuban population.
In 1848, Cirilo Villaverde was arrested by Spanish soldiers at his home. In 1849 he managed to escape to the USA , where he published various exile magazines. The novel Cecilia Valdés in particular is considered to be one of the most important works of Cuban national literature.
