The Cirneco dell 'Etna is an Italian breed of dog recognized by the FCI and originating from the island of Sicily ( FCI Group 5, Section 7, Standard No. 199 ).
Origin and history
Earlier studies suggested that the Cirneco dell'Etna descended from hunting dogs that were bred in the Nile Valley during the Pharaonic times . The Cirneco dell'Etna then came to Sicily with the Phoenicians . However, the latest research supports another theory: The Cirneco dell'Etna originally comes from Sicily and lived on the slopes of Mount Etna . Coins and engravings from the Roman era prove that dogs of this type were found in Sicily before the birth of Christ.
description
The Cirneco dell'Etna is medium-sized (up to 50 cm and up to 12 kg in weight), built in a square, slim, but still tough and robust. The fur is short, very smooth and firm. The fur on the trunk and tail is about 3 cm long. The coat color is fawn, from intense to washed out, like isabel-sand-colored. White or piebald specimens can occur; as a rule, however, the Cirneco dell'Etna has only a few white markings.
The ears are noticeably large and typical when standing, just like the Podencos .
use
The Cirneco dell'Etna is used to hunt wild rabbits . Its distribution area mainly includes the region around Mount Etna, on the slopes of which it locates rabbits in the bushes and rubble. He drives the rabbits out of their hiding places so that the hunters can get a shot.
For dogs that want to win the Italian beauty championship, participation in a hunting test is mandatory. Since 2001 the hunting test has also been compulsory for obtaining the FCI's beauty championship.
