Citadellet in 1903

Citadellet was a fortress built between 1848 and 1851 in Karljohansvern ( Horten , Norway ) . In cooperation with the fortress " Norske Løve ", which was built from 1852 to 1859 on the island of Vealøs to the north , it was supposed to protect the main port of the Norwegian Navy in Karljohansvern. The architect was Christian Heinrich Grosch (1801–1865).

The fortress was built on a steep hill, the highest point on the peninsula, and was therefore also known as the “Fortress on the Chicken Head” (“Fortet på Kyllinghodet”). It was almost circular to the east, north and west, with access from the south side. There were 14 large-caliber cannons in the casemates , and 11 more were in the roof battery. The fortress was surrounded by a circular dry moat and access was via a drawbridge . Due to its exclusive orientation towards the Oslofjord , the harbor entrance and the inner harbor, the fortress was not suitable for defense against a possible attack from the southern land side. It was also obsolete soon after its completion with the emergence of the use of HE shells .

The fortress and the mountain were blown up and demolished in 1971 to make way for a large new welding hall for the Horten shipyard. No residues remained
