Citrusdal is a town with 7,177 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the municipality of Cederberg , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located 182 meters above sea level about 180 kilometers north of Cape Town in the valley of the Olifants River on the national road N7 at the foot of the Cedar Mountains .
With around 100,000 tons of citrus fruits annually, the city is the center of orange and lemon cultivation in the region. The cultivation of citrus fruits has a long tradition here. At around 250 years old, the oldest orange tree in South Africa grows on the Hexrivier farm . The tree still bears fruit every year. Wine is also grown here with great success in the areas of Citrusdal Mountain and Citrusdal Valley.
The city was founded in 1916 by the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and received city status in 1957. The city name refers to the citrus fruit cultivation in the valley.
