City Farm Schönbrunn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

City Farm Schönbrunn was an adventure garden and the first “Children's Garden” in Vienna. It was founded by the non-profit organization City Farm, which aims to promote urban gardening , gardening education and ecological education . “The Children's Garden” in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York served as a model for founding City Farm Schönbrunn . City Farm Schönbrunn was a certified farm school operation. In 2018, City Farm moved its urban adventure garden to Augarten and has been operating as City Farm Augarten ever since.

history

In 2011 Lisa Reck Burneo and Wolfgang Palme founded the City Farm Schönbrunn on the site of the historic Schönbrunn dairy farm, in the immediate vicinity of the Schönbrunn Zoo , Gloriette and the Austrian Federal Gardens . The foundation stone was laid as part of the Junior City Farmer project in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management , the daily newspaper Kurier and the teaching and research center for horticulture Schönbrunn .

City Farm's Schönbrunn location was terminated for autumn 2018. However, the City Farm was able to move to an area of more than 4,000 m² in Vienna's Augarten and reach even more people there. Since there was no financial support from public authorities, a fundraising campaign was started in October 2017.

offer

A wide range of garden education programs were offered for children, teenagers and adults. On around 4,000 square meters there was a willow room as well as student and themed beds surrounded by orchards and a fairytale forest with a sequoia tree . Kindergarten groups and school classes attended garden workshops on various topics all year round. In addition, school classes had the opportunity to create their own beds under professional guidance and to look after, plant and harvest them regularly. Around 3,200 children visited the City Farm Schönbrunn in 2013.
