School on the farm is an Austrian educational program to convey educational content relating to agriculture on site. It is similar to the learning on the farm initiative in Germany and school on the farm in Switzerland.

School on the farm is an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture and the Forum Environmental Education. It is a project financed by the federal government, the state and the European Union as part of the program for the development of rural areas in the context of the Green Pact, and is applied for and implemented by the Tyrolean rural training institute. At the LFI it is implemented within the framework of the Agriculture and Schools program , which is subsidized by the EU Rural Development Regulation - Educational Support.

The project was started in 1998 and is being carried out throughout Austria. The offer is taken up by around 40–50,000 students each year.

Course content

The project "aims to bring the concerns, the situation and the importance of agriculture and forestry into the classroom." As part of the various activities of the project, tailored to the age and type of school of the young people, the pupils should experience the Practice farming and gathering food. As a result, children and young people gain insights into the rural economy, recognize natural cycles, learn to relate to their own living environment and strengthen their attitude as citizens and consumers (“personal, social and professional competence”). The program thus corresponds to the requirements for modern subject teaching , such as the curriculum of the elementary school requires. Knowledge about ecological and economic interrelationships, different forms of cultivation , origin and production techniques of food , new developments in agriculture and old cultural techniques should be conveyed. School on the farm is particularly suitable for interdisciplinary teaching and project teaching , and makes a contribution to sustainable development in the personal, social and ecological area.

Under the motto Understanding by grasping , the various agricultural activities are carried out at manual labor level in the respective programs (in the sense of handicraft teaching ). School on the farm opens up a wide range of opportunities for children and young people to work on the farm or on the mountain pastures . By combining physical work, sensual experience of nature and imparting practical skills, it is possible to sensitize young people to agriculture and the natural area of ​​Alm.

Offers and methods

The following activities are offered all year round for school classes or groups of children and young people on the farm or in the alpine pastures:

  • School on the farm: Farm visits - half-day or full-day: Here children and young people can establish contact with farm animals and cultivated plants that are mostly only known to them from the media or as commercial end products, but also see agricultural machinery in use, and in basic work processes (such as stable work, Milking, sowing and harvesting, processing of animal products). Visiting the farm serves to get to know the basics of agriculture and is also intended to arouse interest.
  • School on the farm: project week on the farm with accommodation and meals. The project week enables in-depth insight, enables young people to perceive everyday life on the farm, to build personal relationships with the farm animals and to follow the development of a product.
  • Experience Alm: A sub-project of the school on the farm and also runs under its logo. This project conveys the typical Austrian economy, and in particular the close connection between culture and landscape. This method was developed by the agricultural district authority and the district chamber of farmers in Gmunden in 2002 as a school on the mountain pasture .

Visits to the farm can take the form of courses / excursions, project weeks as creative weeks, internships or as part of the rural school week. Erlebnis Alm is possible both as a weekly project and as part of hiking days .

Participating farms

In the 2003/2004 school year, 691 farms in Austria offered farm visits (6000 of the pupils alone visited the Norbertinum organic experience in Tullnerbach , which is currently out of service until 2012 due to renovation and will then be reopened as part of the Wienerwald Biosphere Park Center ), and 35 farms for project weeks 11 of them in the province of Salzburg . In particular, companies are sought with developments in innovative areas or companies that illustrate a holistic branch of production - so that the cycle from production to marketing can be optimally illustrated for the students. In addition to traditional cattle and dairy farming, including alpine farming and arable and agricultural farming, special forms of farming such as fruit and wine growing, herb cultivation and cut flower cultivation, or riding stables, fish farming and beekeeping are of interest.

The farms are trained by the rural training institute depending on the offer. In addition to pedagogical communication, the training also includes legal and safety advice on the farm. The agricultural operations conclude with a certificate ( supervisor for SaB, alpine guide , herbal education or nature and landscape guide ).
