Vacation on the farm is an association that represents over 3000 family farms and is accompanied by appropriate quality control.

The brand covers the profiles of organic, health, wine, children, riding, cycling, seminar and disabled-friendly holidays:

The association consists of the federal association and 8 regional associations, and is one of the vacation specialists of Österreich Werbung .

Active farming is a prerequisite for membership . When limited to 10 guest beds ( private room rental), the offer of vacation on the farm - including the farm's own local catering and provision of non-alcoholic and self-produced alcoholic beverages - is a legally permissible secondary farm activity (domestic secondary employment, and therefore not a business). Commercial accommodation is available for more than 10 guest beds , unless holiday apartments are offered without daily services (breakfast or other meals) (type of holiday accommodation type holiday apartments and houses ). The average company size of the association is 12.5 guest beds, approx. 15% of the members run the company commercially (2005).

The number of members has been stagnating for many years. The reasons given (for Styria, but probably valid throughout Austria) are that “on the one hand the number of farms is declining overall, on the other hand a certain number of landlords have rented more than 10 beds in the meantime and thus fall under commercial operations or on leasing of holiday apartments. "

Economical meaning

With around 39,650 beds (2009), Farm Holidays is one of the largest tourist organizations in Austria , and now includes almost the entire sector of the private accommodation category on farms (total Austria 2007: 5,704 businesses, 44,812 beds). With a total of around 2.3 million overnight stays , the division comprises around 2% of all overnight stays in Austria (2007: 121.4 million). This means that farm holidays in the private accommodation sector alone organize around every 60th night in Austria.

The total daily expenditure of the farm guests is estimated to be a little under € 1 billion annually. Holidays on the farm make an important contribution to securing the livelihood of agricultural businesses in Austria.
