City of Durham was an administrative district with City status in County Durham in England . It was named after the city of Durham , the seat of administration. It also consisted of other localities including Belmont , Brandon and Byshottles , Cassop-cum-Quarrington and West Rainton .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of Borough Durham and Framwellgate, Urban District Brandon and Byshottles and Rural District Durham. On April 1, 2009, in addition to City of Durham, all Dictricts in County Durham were abolished as part of the administrative reform and merged into the Unitary Authority Durham .
