Civis Mundi

Civis Mundi ( Latin = citizen of the world ) is a magazine in the Netherlands . Its subtitle is Tijdschrift voor Politieke Filosofie en Kultuur ( Dutch = magazine for political philosophy and culture). It was founded by the lawyer and publicist Wim Couwenberg, at the request of Cees van den Heuvel, chairman of the Oost-West Institute - Stichting Nederlands Instituut voor Study van en Informatie over Oost-West Betrekkingen (Dutch = East-West Institute - Dutch Study and Information Foundation for East-West Relations). From 1962 to 1970 it was published by the Oost-West Instituut under the title Oost-West . Since 1971 it has been under the current title Civis Mundi by the Stichting Oost-West (= East-West Foundation). It was published four times a year until 2009 as a print version . It has been digitized since 2010 and is only accessible to the public via the Internet and e-mail . The editor is Wim Couwenberg, retired university teacher of Heads of State and Administrative Law . Regular editors include Michel van Hulten, Hans Feddema and Piet Ransijn.

The Stichting Civis Mundi is next yearbooks out, organizes conferences and finances two endowed chairs at the Erasmus University Rotterdam :

  • Chair of Filosofie van cultuur, politiek en religie (= philosophy of culture, politics and religion), since 2008, occupied by Marli Huijer,
  • Chair of Filosofie van de Geneeskunde en de maakbaarheid van de mens (Philosophy of Medicine and Man's Feasibility), since 2011, occupied by Maartje Schermer.

On the occasion of the presentation of the MMXIV yearbook on January 15, 2015, Couwenberg received the Desiderius award from the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam for his contributions to public discussion and opinion-forming in the Netherlands over the past half century .
