The Cize-Bolozon Viaduct is a 273 m long arch bridge between Cize and Bolozon in the department of Ain in the east of France , known as double-deck bridge is designed and the river Ain spans.

history

The bridge was opened in 1875 on the Bourg-en-Bresse - Bellegarde railway line. At the time, the construction cost 339,000 francs. On July 12, 1944, the bridge was blown up by the Resistance and was largely repaired by 1950. In 1990, however, the less frequented line over the bridge was shut down. Only a short time later it experienced a renaissance when the railway line was electrified to be used for TGV traffic between Geneva and Paris . Switzerland contributed 110 million euros to the costs of 341 million euros for the entire route Bourg-en-Bresse - Bellegarde-sur-Valserine (at the time around 165 million francs ). The trains only travel at speeds of 80 km / h, but using the route shortens the journey time by more than 20 minutes. In addition, reactivation was cheaper than building a new line.

construction

The bridge is an arched bridge made of rubble stones with a maximum arch span of 16 m. The pillars are up to 73 m high. At a lower height, a road runs through the pillars. The road is only one lane (priority direction of travel Northwest) and has the number D91 A . The Cize-Bolozon stop is in the immediate vicinity .
