Clann Zú

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clann Zú (pron. / 'Klaun' to: /), Irish "zoo people" or "zoo family", were an Australian - Irish - British rock band based in Melbourne and temporarily Dublin .

history

Clann Zú was founded in Melbourne in 1999. At the end of May 2005, the band broke up after a shorter creative and performance break.

Two members continue to work on their side project MyDisco . Declan de Barra is active under his own name and has completed his first solo album Song of a Thousand Birds with the participation of some former Clann-Zú members as well as some well-known Irish musicians .

style

Clann Zú combined guitar-heavy rock in the tradition of Pearl Jam or Jeff Buckley with sophisticated, but never over-produced arrangements and structures that at least brought them close to the post-rock area. In addition to the instruments and some electronics commonly used in rock music , Clann Zú used an electrically amplified and mostly distorted violin . In addition to the bodhrán , an Irish hand drum , this contributed to a more than slight touch of Irish traditional music , especially on some earlier recordings . On the last album Black Coats and Bandages this traditional component was barely noticeable. In contrast, the texts of two pieces were written and sung entirely in Irish . Another point of tension in her music was the contrast between the sometimes quite aggressive music and the high, fragile and yet intense voice of de Barras.

In contrast to many other post-rock bands, Clann Zú took an open and determined political stance . Above all, worldwide hunger and globalization played a central role in their texts and statements.
