from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clapham Rovers have been one of the premier sports clubs in England since it was founded in 1869 . The club was particularly strong in the fields of football and rugby. The club was well known in the second half of the 19th century and played in Clapham Common, Tooting Commons and Wandsworth Common.

history

On August 10, 1869, WE Rawlinson arranged a meeting that resulted in the formation of a rugby and football club.

The rovers took part in the first FA Cup in 1872 . It was Jarvis Kenrick who scored the first Rovers goal in the FA Cup: on November 11, 1871. The Rovers secured a place in the history books by winning the FA Cup in the 1879/80 season with a 1-0 win over Oxford University AFC in the Kennington Oval . The winning team consisted of: Reginald Birkett, Robert Ogilvie, Edgar Field, Vincent Weston, Norman Bailey, Arthur J. Stanley, Harold Brougham, Francis Sparks, Felix Barry, Edward Ram and Clopton Lloyd-Jones. Lloyd-Jones scored the decisive goal.

The next year the Rovers reached the FA Cup final again, but lost it 0-1 against Old Etonians . Clapham Rovers' James Prinsep held the record until 2004 as the youngest player to ever play an FA Cup final. It was then broken by Millwall's Curtis Weston .

The Clapham Rovers were also among the ten founding clubs of the Surrey County Football Association in 1877.

rugby

Between 1870 and 1881 the Rovers played 151 rugby games, winning 80, losing 30 and drawing 41.

resolution

The date the club was dissolved is unknown. In the tournament for the FA Cup 1885/86 they still took part. Norman Bailey played his last international match on March 19, 1887, where he was still listed as a player for the Rovers. The club played in Wandsworth in 1892. On January 1, 1898, The Times wrote that the Old Carthusians would play Clapham Rovers at the Crystal Palace .

The club existed until at least 1914. An article appeared in the Westminster Gazette about the club's annual dinner.
