The Clara spiked -nosed bucket ( Echymipera clara ) is a species of marsupial that occurs in northern New Guinea and on the island of Yapen .

features

The Clara spiked nose bag reaches a body length of 27 to 41 cm, has a tail 8 to 10.5 cm long and weighs 0.82 to 1.7 kg. There is a strong sexual dimorphism, and males can become around 50% heavier than females. They have bigger skulls with a well-developed crest, very long canines, and stronger premolars. The peritoneum of the males is salmon-colored, that of the females is whitish. The dorsal fur of both sexes is dark and unpatterned and less bristly than other species of spiked-nosed fish. The soles of the hind paws are black. In some specimens, the lips and hair immediately above or below are white.

Habitat and way of life

The Clara spiked-nosed bucket lives in large, undisturbed primary rainforests at heights of 300 to 1700 meters. However, some specimens have also been caught in secondary forests or gardens. The animals are nocturnal and spend the day in nests under the leafy layer, under large moss cushions or other materials that cover the forest floor. Like other nosebabs, they are likely to be omnivorous, but so far only figs and the fruit of screw trees have been identified with certainty as part of their diet. The females have six teats in the bag. Females carrying one or two pups in their pouches were caught in January and July.

Danger

The IUCN lists the Clara spiked-nosed bag as Least Concern. The distribution area is large and also includes areas sparsely populated by humans. The animals are also found in some protected areas.
