"Ornithological Expedition Stein" in the Dutch East Indies (1931–1932)

On behalf of the Botanical Museum in Berlin, he left for the Dutch East Indies with his wife Clara in 1930. The expedition was intended as a continuation of Ernst Mayr's expedition to Dutch New Guinea in 1928. The Zoological Museum in Buitenzorg provided two experienced taxidermists . The new ornithological expedition was to explore the island of Waigeu and a few other islands, the Geelvinkbai and finally the Weyland Mountains , the western foothills of the snow mountains . The American Museum of Natural History in New York provided the funds . Stein was selected for this trip through the intercession of Erwin Stresemann and the then director (1921–1945) of the Botanical Museum in Berlin Ludwig Diels . The expedition ended after about a year and a yield of about 3000 birds and 600 mammals.
