Clara Mannes

Clara Mannes , b. Damrosch (born December 12, 1869 in Breslau , † March 16, 1948 in New York City ) was a pianist and music teacher.

Life

The daughter of the conductor Leopold Damrosch and sister of Walter and Frank Damrosch came with her family to New York in 1872, where she received her first piano lessons. She studied piano with Hermann Scholtz and music theory with Johannes Schreyer in Dresden . In 1897 she took lessons from Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin .

In 1898 she married the violinist David Mannes , with whom she performed as a male duo in the USA until the mid-1920s . In 1916 she and her husband opened the Mannes School of Music . Here she was in charge of the ensemble playing department and taught chamber music until her death.

After David and Clara Mannes died, their son Leopold Damrosch Mannes took over the management of the school.
