biography

Hocke was a carpenter's daughter. She attended elementary school. In 1925 she married the master carpenter Heinrich Hocke (1899–1963) and both lived in Bremer Schnoor No. 14 , which she owned in the same year. In the Great Depression of 1929, the couple bought their first barrel organ with which they as a wandering musician, especially at the time of Bremer free market moved through the city to get some zuverdienen in the economically difficult period added.

After the Second World War , the son took over the carpentry, while the couple built up the organ business. Organ builder Wilhelm Holl lived in the same house and built and repaired the organs, which are also popularly known as organ grinders. The instruments were lent among other things for parties, wedding celebrations, parades or the traditional cathedral stair sweeping , on which unmarried men celebrate their thirtieth birthday. After her husband's death in the 1960s, “Mudder Hocke”, as she was affectionately known, continued to run the business. Hocke became the perfect mechanic who paid close attention to her barrel organs. Klaus Decho (1949–2017) supported them and continued the still existing Mutter Hockes barrel organ rental business .
