The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own measurements and aerial photographs by the United States Navy from 1964 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1966 after Leroy Clark (* 1895), a member of the winter team on the second Antarctic expedition (1933 –1935) by the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd .
