Claude-Émile Bayle , also just Émile Bayle , (born October 18, 1819 in La Rochelle , † January 17, 1895 ) was a French paleontologist and mineralogist.

Bayle grew up in La Rochelle, took an early interest in natural history (his family was related to that of the palaeontologist Alcide Dessalines d'Orbigny and he was close friends with him) and studied from 1838 at the École polytechnique and from 1842 to 1844 at the Ecole des Mines . His teachers include Élie de Beaumont and Ours-Pierre-Armand Petit-Dufrenoy . He then worked in the Corps des Mines, where he became chief engineer, built up and cataloged the palaeontological collection (on around 185,000 index cards, the collection has been at the University of Claude Bernard in Lyon since 1978), taught palaeontology and mineralogy from 1848 and became professor for in 1864 Paleontology was. In 1881 he retired.

He also held a professorship in paleontology at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle .

As a paleontologist, he dealt with rudists , mollusks (especially clams from chalk, Jurassic) and tertiary mammals, worked on fossils from Algeria and dealt with questions of taxonomy and nomenclature in general.

He wrote the fossil atlas of the explanations for the geological map of France, which appeared in 1878. Before that he had hardly published anything since 1856 and the fossil atlas was also published without a text volume.

From 1858 he was in the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques for the Société géologique de France .
