Claude-Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon (called Crébillon fils; born February 14, 1707 in Paris , † April 12, 1777 in Paris) was a French author.

Live and act

He was born the son of the tragedy poet Prosper Crébillon Jolyot, Seigneur de Crébillon (1674–1762) and his wife, Marie Charlotte Péaget (approx. 1690–1711), daughter of a Parisian pharmacist. He married M. Henriette Stafford-Howard (1711–1755) on April 23, 1748. The couple had a son, Madeleine Henry Jolyot Crébillon, who died at the age of four.

He was best known for his satirical key novel Tanzaï et Néadarné ( Tanzai and Neadarne or The Skimmer , 1734), the first-person narrator perspective "The aberrations of heart and mind" (1736), the "moral story" Le Sopha ( The Sopha , 1742) and the “moral dialogue” Le Hasard du coin du feu ( The game of chance at the fireplace , 1763). For his libertarian texts he had to endure state repression several times, for example after the publication of Tanzaï et Néadarné he was sentenced to several weeks imprisonment in Vincennes ; in response to Le Sopha , he was banished from Paris. Crébillon enjoyed the protection of Madame de Pompadour , to her he owed the office of royal censor, Censure royale, which his father had previously held. From 1774 to 1776 he also worked as a theater censor. Crébillon's works were very well received in Enlightenment Germany; some of Christoph Martin Wieland's writings , including The Adventures of Don Sylvio von Rosalva (1764) and Der goldene Spiegel (1772), are influenced by him.
