Claude Albert Mayer

Claude Albert Mayer (born November 16, 1918 in Mainz , † May 21, 1998 in Wisbech St Mary near Wisbech ) was a British Romanist of German origin.

life and work

Klaus Mayer went to the humanistic grammar school in Mainz, moved with his parents from National Socialist Germany to Paris to the Lycée Janson de Sailly (1933–1936), where he took the first name Claude-Albert, and fled to England (Lycée français in London, Abitur 1938). There he did military service in the British Army and received British citizenship in 1946. After the war he studied at the University of London and received his doctorate in 1949 with the thesis Satire in French Literature from 1525 to 1560 with particular reference to sources and technique . He then taught at the Universities of Hull, Southampton and Bedford College in London (1959-1965). From 1965 to 1978 he was the successor to Frank Thomas Herbert Fletcher in the James Barrow Chair of French at the University of Liverpool (successor: Peter Thomas Ricketts). In 1970 he became chairman of the Society for French Studies. His research was dominated by Clément Marot and the French Renaissance throughout his life .

CA Mayer was an honorary doctorate from the University of Montpellier .
