Life
Claude de L'Estoile was the son of Pierre de L'Estoile , who left him a substantial fortune in 1611. He emerged as a poet and playwright and was appointed to the first season of the Académie française by Richelieu in 1634 (seat no. 25). In 1638 he was one of the five authors ( Les cinq auteurs ) who wrote two plays together at Richelieu's behest. The co-authors were Pierre Corneille , Jean Rotrou , François Le Métel de Boisrobert and Guillaume Colletet . In contrast to his poems, his dramatic works have recently been reprinted.
