production

The stories are shown with a camera from Anne Frank's subjective perspective. The events are based on the real diary entries that Anne Frank wrote between March 29, 1944 and the arrest of the people in hiding on August 4, 1944. The 13-year-old Dutch- Mexican leading actress Luna Cruz Perez does not quote the lyrics literally, but improvises in her own words. The pictures from the Secret Annex are supplemented by flashbacks to the time before life in hiding.

The series is based on a concept that the producers Frank de Horde and Tim Vloothuis from Every Media presented to the Anne Frank House two years earlier. Hanna van Niekerk directed, while Natascha van Weezel and Wies Fest developed the scenario. Employees of the Anne Frank House checked the historical accuracy and accompanied the filming. The interior was shot in a replica set of the Secret Annex and some flashbacks were filmed in the Rivierenbuurt, where Anne Frank and her family lived in hiding before the time.

The videos are available on the Anne Frank House YouTube channel in more than 60 countries where the diary is in the public domain. In addition to Germany, this includes many other European countries, parts of the American continent, Israel , India and China . It cannot be accessed in the United States due to copyright restrictions. The actors speak Dutch like the real people in the Secret Annex. Subtitles are available in German, English, Portuguese and Spanish .

In addition to the diary videos, there are eight additional videos in the “Explainer” category, which provide information on real events and explanations on topics such as discrimination and the scapegoat . These videos, which are also subtitled in several languages, are intended to enable educational use. Femke de Koning from the Anne Frank House will be the speaker. At the end of each video, Luna Cruz Perez asks a question on the subject. In the eighth video, de Koning speaks to Perez as well as Shai Eschel and Ezra Blok, the actors of Margot Frank and Peter van Pels. On May 7, 2020, a backstage video was also released in which Perez gives a glimpse behind the scenes. An interview with Perez followed on May 11th.

reception

Ronald Leopold, the director of the Anne Frank House, said of the series that she invited “to enter into a direct relationship with the girl Anne. I hope that many young people will feel addressed by the video diary, that they will learn something about Anne Frank's life story and that they will get an impetus to think about anti-Semitism and discrimination today. ”Since the first publication with contact restrictions within the framework of COVID-19 Pandemic coincided, he also commented on possible parallels: “The way they are their daily life in hiding, the connections they develop with those around them in the limited space, and the relationship between mother and daughter, for example Elements that today's readers can understand better. "(" The way she describes her daily life in hiding, the relationships she's building with people around her in a cramped space, and the relationship between mother and daughter, for example, are elements that will be better recognized by today's readers. “) In an interview he emphasized that the video diary is something different from a vlog , and uh hoped that the project would raise awareness among young people who take selfies at Holocaust sites. He also pointed out differences to the "Eva Stories", an Instagram series about Éva Heyman .

Jacqueline van Maarsen praised her: “I am thrilled with this video diary. I had to get used to the idea for a while, but I think it's good that Anne Frank's story has been brought into modern times. "

Rich Brownstein, who works as a lecturer for Yad Vashem and mainly deals with Holocaust films , wrote an extensive review of the series that appeared in the Jerusalem Post . In it, he describes the performance of the leading actress as passable, with the romantic episode being more of a waste of time, and praises the authentic set and the use of the Dutch language. However, he finds the anachronism with the video camera inappropriate . He accuses producers of not trusting today's youth to understand traditional storytelling, but hopes that this will give young people access to “more significant and mature offerings” like the 2001 film .
