Furrer began cycling in 1952. With the victory at the Habsburg Tour in 1956, he qualified for what was then the A-class of the amateur class in Switzerland. From 1957 he concentrated increasingly on cyclo-cross racing . A year later he was appointed to the Swiss national team and started at the UCI World Championships . In the victory of André Dufraisse he finished 9th. 1959 to 1962 he was runner-up in the national championship. He then won the title in 1963 ahead of Hermann Gretener . In 1964 he retired from the national team and became Swiss military cyclist champion .

Furrer completed an apprenticeship as a bicycle mechanic.
