Player career

society

Claudio Sala began his career in 1965 at AC Monza Brianza , for whose professional team he played three years in the championship. A year later he was relegated to the third-class Serie C with Monza . In the following year the immediate promotion to Serie B could be realized. In 1968, the midfielder signed a contract with SSC Napoli , with which he reached seventh place in Serie A. He then changed clubs again and joined Torino Calcio . With the Turin team, he was under contract for a total of eleven years and played numerous games for Torino.

He celebrated his greatest success by winning the Italian championship in the 1975/76 season and the Coppa Italia in 1971. His greatest personal success came in 1976 and 1977, when he was named the best Serie A player of the year by the Italian sports magazine Il Guerin Sportivo . In 1980 he left Turin for CFC Genoa . With the Genoese club, he made it to the top division in the 1980/81 season and was able to secure relegation in Serie A a year later. The midfielder then ended his active career and a few years later began a career as a football coach .

National team

In 1971 Sala was also appointed to the Italian national football team for the first time, for which he made his debut on November 20, 1971 in the game against Austria . The high point of his career in the national team was participation in the 1978 World Cup . Sala was called up by national coach Enzo Bearzot in the Italian squad for the tournament and used in the two games against the Netherlands and Brazil . After losing the game for third place against Brazil, Sala and the national team took fourth place.

Coaching career

In contrast to his active career, Claudio Sala remained largely unsuccessful as a coach in his subsequent stations. In the 1988/89 season he took over as the successor to the dismissed Luigi Radice Torino Calcio . Sala was also able to prevent relegation to Serie B and was then dismissed.

In the summer of 1990, the then third division US Catanzaro signed him as a new coach. After the disappointing results, combined with the fall on a relegation place, he was dismissed from the club in the same year. At the beginning of the following year, however, those responsible brought him back to Catanzaro as head coach, but before the end of the season he was replaced by Gennaro Rambone and finally dismissed. The team finally relegated to the fourth-class C2 series .
