Cleistocactus clavispinus is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet clavispinus means 'spherical or spiked like a nail'.

description

Cleistocactus clavispinus grows as a shrub with upright shoots that are mostly branched at the base and that are 8 to 10 centimeters in diameter and 20 to 80 centimeters long. The roots are thickened. There are 14 to 20 ribs on which are densely packed areoles . are located. The 2 to 3 stiff central spines are gray with a darker tip and up to 3 inches long. The up to 30 brown radial spines are strong and up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The strongly curved, red flowers are up to 8 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Cleistocactus clavispinus is widespread in the Peruvian Ica in the Nazca Valley. It was first described as Loxanthocereus clavispinus in 1957 by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg . Carlos Ostolaza placed it in the genus Cleistocactus in 1998 . Cleistocactus clavispinus is possibly a natural hybrid between Cleistocactus acanthurus and Haageocereus pseudomelanostele subsp. turbidus .
