Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Cathedral in Irapuato

The diocese of Irapuato was established on January 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Venerabiles Fratres from ceding territories of the Archdiocese of Morelia and the Diocese of León and subordinated to the Archdiocese of San Luis Potosí as a suffragan diocese. The first bishop was José de Jesús Martínez Zepeda .

On November 25, 2006 the diocese of Irapuato was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. subordinated to the Archdiocese of León as a suffragan with the Apostolic Constitution Mexicani populi .
