Cleistocactus hystrix is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hystrix means 'hedgehog, porcupine'.

Cleistocactus hystrix has a shrubby growth with spread and somewhat upright or creeping shoots with an upright shoot tip. The densely thorned shoots reach heights of up to 1.5 meters with diameters of 6 to 10 centimeters. There are approximately 14 to 18 notched ribs . The 6 to 9 awl, very strong, often twisted central spines are grayish brown and up to 2.5 inches long. One of them often reaches a length of 10 centimeters. The 16 to 20 needle-like, strong, radiant radial spines are brownish and later gray. Its tip is darker. They are up to 2.5 inches long.

The red flowers are up to 5 centimeters long. The almost spherical, reddish brown and slightly green fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cleistocactus hystrix is common in the Peruvian region of Ayacucho at altitudes of 3000 to 3300 meters. It was first described as Loxanthocereus hystrix in 1957 by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg . Carlos Ostolaza placed it in the genus Cleistocactus in 1998 .

Cleistocactus hystrix may be a natural hybrid that Cleistocactus acanthurus could be a parent.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
