Cleistocactus peculiaris is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet peculiaris means 'peculiar, extraordinary'.

description

Cleistocactus peculiaris grows shrubby with few branched, gray-green shoots and reaches heights of up to 2 meters with diameters of 1.7 to 2.2 centimeters. There are 10 to 13 very blunt ribs . The needle-like, straight, stiff thorns are reddish brown. The 4 to 8 rather strong central spines are 4 to 7 millimeters long, the 8 to 12 fine, slightly protruding radial spines 3 to 5 millimeters long.

The more or less radially symmetrical, purple-red flowers hardly open and are up to 6 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Cleistocactus peculiaris is common in the Peruvian regions of Lima , Apurímac and Ica at altitudes of 1400 to 2000 meters. It was first described as Loxanthocereus peculiaris in 1957 by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg . Carlos Ostolaza placed it in the genus Cleistocactus in 1998 .

Cleistocactus peculiaris is possibly a synonym for Cleistocactus acanthurus .
