Clementine helmet

Clementine Helm (born October 9, 1825 in Delitzsch , † November 26, 1896 in Berlin ) was a well-read children's and youth author in the 19th century who made a name for herself with a so-called Backfischroman .

Life

Clementine Helm was born the daughter of a businessman in Delitzsch. She lost her parents at an early age and was brought up in the house of her uncle, the Weiss Schulrat in Merseburg . Later she lived with her uncle, the mineralogist Christian Samuel Weiss , in Berlin . There she attended the royal Luisenstift and was trained as an educator. Since 1847 she was married to the geologist and paleontologist Heinrich Ernst Beyrich , with whom she also adopted the daughter of her late sister.

Clementine Helm was one of the most successful young women writers in the second half of the 19th century. She wrote around 40 novels for girls. Her best-known work is "Backfischchens Leiden und Freuden" (Backfischchens Leiden und Freuden) from 1863. Here, the story of 15-year-old Grete is told with great love, who is brought to her aunt in Berlin in order to receive a proper upbringing.

Clementine Helm died just months after her husband's death in 1896 at the age of 71. Her grave was in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg and was later cleared. On September 2, 2018, a new memorial stone was placed on the former grave at the initiative of the Protestant parish.
