Clifford Brangwynne

Clifford P. “Cliff” Brangwynne (* around 1978) is an Irish - American biophysicist at Princeton University .

Brangwynne earned a bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2001 and a Ph.D. in 2007 from David A. Weitz at Harvard University. in applied physics . As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with Tony Hyman at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and with Frank Jülicher at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems . He has been at Princeton University since 2011, where he holds a professorship in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering . Since 2018 Brangwynne has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Brangwynne investigates the division of cells into their compartments and the structure and function (especially gene regulation ) of cell organelles without their own membrane , including P-granules , Cajal bodies and nucleoli , along the entire ontogeny . He is known for his work, which applies the physics of soft matter and methods of molecular biology (including optogenetics ) to various intracellular phases and the phase transitions and thus helps to better understand living cells and tissue, but also influences them ( synthetic biology ).

Clifford Brangwynne attended the 27th Solvay Conference in 2017 . In 2018 he received a MacArthur Fellowship and in 2020 he was awarded the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences and the Michael and Kate Bárány Award from the Biophysical Society .
