Cloak and Dagger is the third studio album by the new wave of British heavy metal band Witchfynde .

Emergence

Steve Bridges, singer on the first two Witchfynde albums, left the band in October 1980, immediately after the recordings of the previous album Stagefright , because of the insufficient support the label Rondelet Records gave the band. In-band engineer Rich Peach also broke up. Above all, Rondelet Records found itself unable to pay for the expensive live performances. The contract was dissolved in dispute, and it would be a full two years before Witchfynde to Expulsion Ltd. changed. When the problems around the band slowly cleared up, they decided to record a new album. Since Bridges lacked vocals, bassist Pete Surgey took over the role briefly, and the band wrote new material and recorded it with the help of Phil Chilton. These demos formed the framework for the new album. Since Pete Surgey did not want to act permanently as a singer, the band took Luther Beltz on as a new singer and finally took on the album version of Cloak and Dagger .

“They wanted a more flamboyant, aggressive, meaner looking singer. [...] I got the job. "

style

Compared to its predecessor, Cloak and Dagger has become harder again and thus follows on from the sound of the debut album Give 'Em Hell . Also on this album the lyrics related to occult or satanic topics. The sound is generally gloomy, which is reinforced by the orchestral singing of Luther Beltz. It is also a very classically oriented album, so part of the intro of Cry Wolf is a guitar-played version of Edvard Grieg's Peer-Gynt-Suites .

Beltz's singing style has often been compared to that of Mercyful Fate singer King Diamond ; Beltz said he had never heard of the band until English writer and journalist Malcolm Dome compared Cloak and Dagger to the music of Mercyful Fate.
