Cloeon dipterum is an insect - Art from the order of mayflies (Ephemeroptera).
Characteristics of the imago
The pterostigma of the wings has three to five transverse veins (Fig. 2, top right), in Cloeon simile there are more. The wings of the pre- imago are milky (Fig. 7). The males have turban eyes (picture 1) and the wings are crystal clear (picture 9). In females, the field between the anterior longitudinal veins is speckled (picture of the taxobox).
Characteristics of the larva
The body is brownish green in color with lighter markings and up to 9 millimeters long. It is similar to that of Centroptilum luteolum . The first through the sixth pair of tracheal gills are double. Their leaflets are round and of different sizes. The last pair of tracheal gills is simple (image 6). As with Siphlonurus, the tail threads have a dark band. In contrast to Cloeon simile , the end link of the lip probe is tapered on the outside (Figure 3) and the jaw probe is not two-part but three-part (Figure 4).
Occurrence and way of life
The species occurs in Europe, northern Asia and North America . The larvae live in stagnant and slowly flowing water. They can often be found in small pools. The larvae are fast swimmers and feed on detritus , algae and infusoria .
After mating, the female adults spend 10 to 14 days resting near water. Within seconds to minutes after the eggs are released into the water by the females, the pre-larvae hatch ( ovoviviparia ). As a rule there are two generations per year, or three generations if the conditions are favorable. The adults' flight time is from May to September.
