history

The company was founded in 1898 by Caspar Cloer as a toolmaker and art forge in Neheim . His three sons Eugen, Wilhelm and Carl Cloer took over the company in the late 1920s and specialized in electrical household appliances. Initially, irons were manufactured in-house and consisted of gray cast iron soles, metal hoods, handles made of lacquered wood and a detachable lead with a porcelain plug and woven cable.

On January 10, 1938, an entry was made in the commercial register of the Arnsberg District Court as Caspar Cloer GmbH & Co. KG. From the 1940s onwards, waffle irons and kettles were also produced. When developing the waffle iron, the tried and tested technology of the iron was used. In principle, waffle irons were constructed like two irons standing on top of each other. They consisted of the cast baking plates, a metal housing and also lacquered wooden handles. In the 1950s, the heavy cast iron plates of the waffle machines were replaced by aluminum baking plates, which in turn made the use of a thermostat necessary, since the aluminum threatened to melt due to its lower melting temperature. In addition, a control lamp was installed that went on and off with the heater and thus indicated when the waffle was ready. Cloer thus invented the first waffle iron with a thermostat and control lamp, the waffle maker. In addition, the product range was expanded to include croissant irons, storage disks and contact grills.

On July 7, 1961 at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) , the brand "Cloer" as a word mark registered and entered.

After the death of the three brothers, Günther Cloer took over the company in 1966. He modernized it, for example, by outsourcing production and simplifying work processes. In addition, the first waffle machine with a plastic housing was developed. This material, which was still new at the time, made shapes possible that were difficult to produce in metal.

In the 1970s, the Cloer company followed suit with the first waffle machine with a baking light and a short time later the device was supplemented by the acoustic signal. In the following years there were further inventions in the Cloer house.

In 2004 Achim Cloer followed in his father's footsteps and took over the management of the company.

The company brought plagiarism proceedings against Tchibo in 2007 . At the beginning of 2008, the process at the Cologne Regional Court was ended by a judgment in favor of Cloers.
