Cloudpunk is an action-adventure game developed by Ion Lands and published for Windows by Maple Whispering Limited in April 2020 . The game is set in the future and has science fiction and cyberpunk elements. It is slated to be released on consoles later in 2020.

Game mechanics

The player takes on the role of Rania, a new delivery driver for the illegal company Cloudpunk. The player has to maneuver a HOVA, a flying car, through a cyberpunk city and pick up and deliver packages and passengers. It is also possible to park the car in certain parking spaces and explore parts of the city on foot. During some missions, the player can make decisions that influence what happens and lead to different dialogues with the characters. In addition, the player can collect optional story items scattered around the city to unlock additional side quests and stories. It is possible to upgrade the HOVA to improve speed and damage control, as well as purchase items for Rania's apartment to decorate.

action

Rania moved from the country to the town of Nivalis and now works for Cloudpunk, a not entirely legal delivery company. She receives her orders from a person called Control and has to deliver the packages without opening them and without asking questions. During her missions where she delivers packages, she moves around in her HOVA and visits different parts of the city. Along the way, she encounters various characters, including androids, AIs and people from all walks of life. As the night progresses, Rania faces various moral dilemmas while she learns the truth about a rogue AI. Her loyal companion dog Camus joins her as a so-called Automata in the cover of the HOVA, while Rania tries to raise enough money to buy him a dog cover and to earn a living in this city.

development

Ion Lands is an independent game developer based in Berlin, Germany and was founded in 2015. The game was announced on November 7th, 2018 and should be released in 2019. reviews
publication Rating
GameStar 85/100
Meta-ratings
Metacritic 73/100

Cloudpunk received "mixed or average reviews," according to review aggregator Metacritic , based on 36 reviews.

Richard Hoover of Adventure Gamers rated the game 4 out of 5 stars, which is rated "very good," and praised the Blade Runner- like aesthetics, the wide variety of characters, the busy, sprawling city and the customizable vehicle, apartment and Outfit, while criticizing that some dialogues dragged on too long, the traffic is unaware of the player's presence, and the lack of a security system. Hoover called the game "a highly addicting sci-fi experience".

Adzuken Q. Rumpelfelt of online magazine Destructoid gave the game a mixed rating with a 6.5 out of 10 rating, saying, “Cloudpunk is certainly a game to watch, but there's not much beyond that to underpin its cyberpunk aesthetic. Flying around in the hover car is fun, and the city is a consistently surprising visual treat, but whenever the game gets to the point where it gets context, it stumbles. You mostly get what it says on the box, but Cloudpunk would have benefited from more compelling gameplay and a more focused storyline. It's not that it's poorly designed or horribly written, it just doesn't quite get to the heights. "
