The Club Portugalete is a Spanish football club from Portugalete in the Basque Country . The club was founded in 1909 and plays its home games at the Estadio La Florida , which can seat 3,000 spectators.
history
The history of Club Portugalete goes back to the year 1899, when the football game came to Portugalete and the Basque Country via English immigrants, so the first club, Athletic de Portugalete, was founded. In 1909, some sports clubs were united under the name Club Deportivo Portugalete , which is the official founding club of today's Club Portugalete .
In 1915, the club first reached the top division in the Campeonato Regional Norte . In the same year the leagues in the Basque Country were restructured and Portugalete had to leave the league again, which at the same time led to the fact that the club was completely stopped. In 1921 the football department was re-established and the club traded under the name Portugalete Futbol Club , later as Portugalete Chiqui and then as Nuevo Club Portugalete at the time of Franquism .
1951 Portu succeeded for the first time promotion to the third highest division in Spain, the Tercera División , after having previously spent many years in the regional leagues. The club was able to hold the league for a few seasons, but rose again to the regional leagues. Up to 2001 you could always move up to the Tercera División, which meanwhile became the fourth division, but rarely earn places in the top half of the table. In the 2004/05 season you could complete group 4 of the fourth division for the first time as champions and so participate in the playoffs for Segunda División B , where the promotion was also successful. As 19th in the second group, they had to accept relegation to the fourth division after only one season, where they have remained since then, but always earned places in the top four, which each time brought access to the playoffs in the third division with it . The 2007/08 season could also be finished as champions again, but missed promotion in the first round of the playoffs against CD Don Benito . In the 2009/10 season they failed only in the final round of the playoffs at Getafe B . Benefiting from the exclusion of B-teams, Portu qualified as second in the table for the Copa del Rey 2010/11 , where they only failed in the round of 32 at the first division club Getafe FC.
