Mammillaria halei is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors JP Hale a landowner in Baja California who supported the townshend Stith Brandegee on his expedition in 1889.
description
Mammillaria halei forms large groups that can grow up to 2 meters in size. The individual shoots are cylindrical and 30 to 40 centimeters long and 5 to 7.5 centimeters in diameter. The warts are relatively short. The axillae are woolly. The 3 to 4 central spines are reddish-brown, stiff, strong and about 3.5 centimeters long. They turn gray with age. The 10 to 21 radial spines, which are also gray, are initially also reddish-brown. They are only 1.2 inches long.
The red flowers are vertical. They have a crooked and long flower tube . The fruits are club-shaped, red and up to 1.2 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria halei is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur and occurs exclusively on the islands of Magdalena and Santa Magarita .
The first description was in 1889 by the American botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee .
Synonyms are the following described species and varieties: Cactus halei (Brandegee) JMCoulter (1894) and Cochemiea halei (Brandegee) Walton (1899).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
