Codex Augusteus

The Codex Augusteus was an influential collection of the laws of Electoral Saxony , which appeared in Leipzig in 1724 . It was named by the publisher Johann Christian Lünig in honor of Elector Friedrich August I of Saxony (1670–1733, Elector 1694–1733).

The Codex Augusteus (in German also Augustean Codex ) was important as the most extensive collection of laws for the jurists in the Electorate of Saxony and was popular because of its reliability. The collection was compiled by the lawyer and Leipzig town clerk Johann Christian Lünig (1662–1740) and then officially approved. The first, two-volume edition covered the period from 1255 to 1724. It was later supplemented in three sequels with numerous other regulations.

The title of the collection after the first edition is CODEX AUGUSTEUS, or Neuvermehrtes Corpus juris Saxonici, which includes the constitutiones, decisions, mandates and ordinances issued in the Electorate of Saxony and associated lands, including those of the Margrafthümern Upper and Lower Lusatia, and issued constitutiones, decisions, mandates and ordinances, and one Elencho, useful summaries and perfect registers, With your Royal Majesty in Pohlen, as Elector of Saxony, Most gracious approval given to light and put into proper order by Johann Christian Lünig .

Today the Codex is one of the most important sources on the legal history of Saxony .

In a so-called 1st continuation, the period up to 1772 was added almost 50 years later; In a second continuation, the legal provisions were collected up to the end of 1800. The third continuation mainly covered the period from 1801 to 1818 and thus closed the gap until the regular publication of the Saxon law and regulation gazettes.

A chronological register of current law in the Kingdom of Saxony, published by Karl Merbeth in 1834, is largely based on this semi-official collection, which was published over 100 years after the first edition.
