Coenonympha haydenii is a butterfly ( butterfly ) fromthe noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae). The English name is Hayden's Ringlet or Yellowstone Ringlet, as the moths occur in Yellowstone National Park and the wider area. In addition to Coenonympha haydenii ,only the great meadow bird ( Coenonympha tullia ) and Coenonympha nipisiquit of the genus Coenonympha occurin North America .

Coenonympha haydenii has a wingspan of 35 to 38 mm. The monochrome and unmarked wing tops of the males are dark brown, in the females ocher brown. On the gray-brown underside of the wing, a narrow, shiny lead line runs along the outer edges. In the submarginal region there is a row of five to seven black, partially white seeded eye spots with an orange border.

The half-adult caterpillar is yellow-green with three white dorsal stripes and two pink-edged, white lateral stripes.

distribution and habitat

Coenonympha haydenii is found in southwestern Montana , southeastern Idaho and western Wyoming and lives in clearings, on mountain meadows and in bogs up to 3000 meters.

Way of life

Coenonympha haydenii flies in one generation from late June to early August. The moths often visit flowers to suckle nectar. The males roam their territory in search of females. The caterpillars feed on grasses.
