Coffer Island is a small island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . In the group of Robertson Islands , it lies in the entrance of a bay on the east side of Matthews Island .
In the maps of the Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle , which were made on the basis of surveys between 1912 and 1915, the island is recorded as Koffer Island , Kolter Island and Kotter Island . The Anglicized form that is used today was established by participants in the British Discovery Investigations , which mapped the Robertson Islands in 1933. Evidently the name is derived from the Kuff ( Norwegian Koff ), a type of ship used in the 18th and 19th centuries for coastal navigation.
