Cohors II Delmatarum (Dalmatia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors II Delmatarum [milliaria] [equitata] ( German  2nd cohort of the Delmater [1000 men] [partly mounted] ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is documented by inscriptions.

Name components

  • Delmatarum : the Delmater . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited from the Illyrian tribe of the Delmater on the territory of the Roman province of Dalmatia when the unit was set up .
  • milliaria : 1000 men. Depending on whether it is an infantry cohort ( Cohors milliaria peditata ) or a mixed association of infantry and cavalry ( Cohors milliaria equitata ), the nominal strength of the unit was either 800 or 1040 men. In 2 inscriptions the symbol is used instead of milliaria .
  • equitata : partially mounted. The unit was possibly a mixed formation of infantry and cavalry.

The unit was either a Cohors milliaria (peditata) , a pure infantry cohort with a nominal strength of 800 men, or a Cohors milliaria equitata with a nominal strength of 1040 men (800 infantry and 240 horsemen), consisting of ten centuries of infantry with 80 each Man and eight tower cavalry with 30 riders each.

history

The cohort is evidenced by inscriptions in the province of Dalmatia . The inscription ( CIL 3, 8655 ) found in Salona , dated 169/170 AD, indicates that a wall was built by the unit. John Spaul suggests that the cohort may have been a training and replenishment unit like the Cohors I Delmatarum (Dalmatia) .
