Colección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat
The Collección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat is a museum of fine arts in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires that emerged from a private collection. It is located in the former port district of Puerto Madero .
overview
The foundation goes back to an initiative of María Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat . Fortabat has long been the chairman and main shareholder of Loma Negra , the largest cement factory in Argentina. She made a large part of her extensive art collection available for the museum and commissioned the Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly to build the building.
Work on the two-story, modern glass, steel and concrete structure began in 2002. It opened on October 22, 2008. The museum is located at the end of the northernmost port basin in the Puerto Madero district. On 6000 m² there are two exhibition rooms, a library, an auditorium, offices and a café-restaurant with a view of the renovated harbor warehouses. At the time of opening, the collection contained around 230 works, divided into seven galleries.
The architectural highlight is the roof, whose mobile aluminum sun sails open or close depending on the position of the sun. This roof was a special request from Fortabat, who said: "I've always wanted to be able to see the stars and the paintings at the same time."
Artists on display include Argentinians like Prilidiano Pueyrredón , Benito Quinquela Martín , Emilio Pettoruti , Lino Enea Spilimbergo , Xul Solar, and Europeans like Marc Chagall , Roberto Matta , Salvador Dalí , Gustav Klimt , William Turner and Auguste Rodin . The Argentine painter Antonio Berni has its own gallery and another is for the Fortabat family.
