Rafael Viñoly
Rafael Viñoly Beceiro (born June 1, 1944 in Montevideo ) is an American architect of Uruguayan origin. He has lived and worked in the United States since 1978 .
Life
Viñoly was born the son of the film and theater director Román Viñoly Barreto and the math teacher Maria Beceiro . He received his diploma in architecture from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1968 and his Master of Architecture from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning there a year later. As early as 1964 he founded an architecture office with six other architects, which later grew into one of the largest in South America. In 1978 he went with his family to the United States, where he briefly lectured as a guest lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and then from 1979 settled permanently in New York City , where he founded Rafael Viñoly Architects in 1983 . His first major project there was the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (1988). In 1989 he won the international design competition for the International Forum Tokyo , which was completed in 1996 and is now one of the most important cultural complexes in Japan. Rafael Viñoly Architects was also one of the finalists in the design competition for the World Trade Center , which Daniel Libeskind then won. Viñoly is responsible for the design of the high-rise building 20 Fenchurch Street , known as Walkie Talkie , whose concave and mirrored façade with its burning mirror effect has already caused several damage to property from focused rays of the sun . A similar problem occurs at the Hotel Vdara in Las Vegas, also designed by Rafael Viñoly . Viñoly was awarded the Carbuncle Cup 2015 for the high-rise building at 20 Fenchurch Street .
Viñoly is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and a member of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) and the Sociedad Central de Arquitectos (SCA). In 1994, Rafael Viñoly was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
