Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus is a species of the genus Coleocephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Austrian botanist Franz Buxbaum .
description
Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus grows spread out to upright with dark green shoots and reaches heights of 2 meters with a diameter of 11 centimeters. There are up to 18 notched ribs . The 4 to 9 curved central spines are yellow to yellowish white and up to 10 centimeters long. The 9 to 18 thin, flexible, yellow radial spines are 1 to 11 centimeters long. The cephalium is up to 9 centimeters wide and consists of cream-colored wool and brownish bristles up to 6 centimeters long.
The bell-shaped flowers are greenish white to white, up to 7.5 centimeters long and 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The bluish red to slightly purple fruits reach a diameter of 2 centimeters and are up to 3.5 centimeters long.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus is common in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo . It was first described in 1974 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining .
The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus subsp. buxbaumianus
- Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus subsp. flavisetus
The subspecies Coleocephalocereus buxbaumianus subsp. flavisetus was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered. In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered. The two subspecies were no longer recorded.
