Coleocephalocereus purpureus is a species of the genus Coleocephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the red flowers.

description

Coleocephalocereus purpureus grows upright with columnar, deep green shoots that branch at the base. The shoots reach heights of up to 90 centimeters with diameters of 10 centimeters. There are 13  ribs . The initially golden-yellow to red thorns turn gray later. One of the 4 central spines is up to 7 centimeters long. The other three are between 3 and 3.5 inches long. The 12 expanded and slightly curved radial spines are needle-like. They have a length of 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters. The cephalium , made of gray wool and golden yellow to brown bristles , is up to 50 centimeters long.

The tubular flowers are purple, up to 3 centimeters long and 1.2 centimeters in diameter. The spherical to egg-shaped, shiny red fruits reach a diameter of up to 1.7 centimeters and are 1.7 to 2.5 centimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Coleocephalocereus purpureus is common in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was first described as Buiningia purpurea in 1973 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo . Friedrich Ritter placed them in 1979 in the genus Coleocephalocereus .

Coleocephalocereus purpureus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Critically Endangered (CR)", d. H. critically endangered, classified.
