A Coles supermarket in Adelaide , South Australia

Coles Supermarkets is an Australian supermarket chain. It has been independent since November 21, 2018. Before that, it had been owned by Wesfarmers since November 23, 2007 , and previously it was part of the Coles-Myer Group . With over 740 stores and a total of around 92,000 employees, Coles is the second largest retail company in Australia, after Woolworths .

history

Coles was founded in 1914 by George James (GJ) Coles. Cole's father owned a "Cole Store" in Tasmania . GJ Coles opened its first store on April 9th under the name Coles Variety Store on Smith Street in the Collingwood neighborhood of Melbourne .

In 1960 the first Coles supermarket opened in the Melbourne suburb of North Balwyn. In 1973 Coles succeeded for the first time in operating branches in all of Australia's major cities. In the 1980s, the branches were renamed “Coles New World” or just “New World”. In the early 1990s, the branches were renamed "Coles Supermarkets". In 2005 the “circled tick” logo was introduced, which is still relevant today. The logo had already appeared as an alternative logo from 2003.

In 2006, the branches of BI-LO , Kmart , First Choice Liquor , Liquorland , Theo's and other chain stores, which belonged in whole or in part to the Coles Group (until early 2006 Coles Myer ), were renamed Coles. However, the change of name was stopped in 2007 due to falling sales of the renamed branches. That is why all chain stores are still present on the Australian market today. Branches that were located in the immediate vicinity of an old Coles branch were renamed "Coles Discount Grocery" and converted to the discount concept.

The BI-LO branches, known as Newmart Supermarkets in Western Australia , were renamed in 2002 and 2003. Newmart branches, which were in the vicinity of a Coles branch, were sold to Foodland and renamed "Action Supermarkets".

On July 2, 2007, the Australian company Wesfarmers took over Coles Group Limited for 22 billion Australian dollars. The acquisition was completed in October 2007. In August 2007, Wesfarmers announced plans to restructure the Coles Group. The group should be divided into three branches, namely supermarkets, liquor stores and small shops.

The separation from Wesfarmers took place on November 21, 2018. Each Wesfarmers shareholder received the same number of Coles shares.

Own brands

Coles has three well-known own brands , which in 2005 the older brands such as B. Savings, George J Coles, Farmland, Persona, and Reliance replace:

  • Coles $ mart Buy, a discount-price brand. The prices are often based on the Australian ALDI prices.
  • You'll love Coles, a mid-range brand.
  • Coles Finest, a premium brand.

In 2006 there were 1,600 products under the names "Coles $ mart Buy" and "You'll love Coles"

Branches

The branches are logically structured z. (Often with its own bakery) Since alcoholic in Australia beverages may be sold only under strict conditions as in the service area, bakery products, dairy products, delicatessen, fresh produce, beverages, etc., also often Liquorland or a "Coles Liquor" connected. These usually have an additional entrance so that they can also sell at night. In some branches, especially in Western Australia , there are so-called meat rooms with their own butcher's.
