Coliruhr the suckling and weaning pig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coli Ruhr or Coli diarrhea suction and weaned piglets is a diarrheal disease in piglets , which by the bacterium Escherichia coli is caused.

etiology

The Coliruhr pathogens in suckling and weaned piglets are ETEC strains of E. coli . Many different O groups are isolated, the most common of which is the O antigen 149. Type 4 (K88) dominates among the fimbriae . The bacteria attach to the intestinal mucosa by means of these fimbriae . However, there is no inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, rather the diarrhea is triggered by the action of the enterotoxins formed by the bacteria .

clinic

The result is watery-yellow (brownish when fed too) diarrhea with subsequent dehydration . The desire to suck is mostly preserved. The piglets appear emaciated and scruffy. The morbidity rate is often 100%, and without treatment the mortality rate is also high.

diagnosis

The only reliable diagnosis is the bacteriological detection of ETEC in the upper small intestine in freshly dead piglets that have not been pretreated. In terms of differential diagnosis, transmissible gastroenteritis is particularly important .

therapy

Immediate oral or parenteral antibiotic therapy is advisable. An antibiogram should also be made to prevent resistance . It is also important to ensure that there is an adequate water supply and sufficient heat. Good stable hygiene is recommended for prophylaxis. There is a maternal vaccination. There is also an antibody preparation to be added to the sow feed around the due date or in the feed of the weaned pig around the weaning date.
